On Monday, the Obama administration announced it will be giving mid-size employers (defined as employers with 50-99 full-time equivalent employees) an additional year before it must comply with the employer mandate to offer health insurance to their employees as part of the health care reform bill. This means mid-size companies will have until 2016 to offer insurance to their employees or else be subject to financial penalties based on the number of employees. Large companies (those with over 99 full-time equivalent employees) will have until 2015; however individuals are still required to have health insurance starting in January of 2014.
